Montana State University Billings
The UHP challenges students to take full advantage of university and program resources and of their personal and intellectual talents. Toward these ends, it promotes a variety of opportunities inside and outside the classroom. Honors sections of General Education requirements are smaller than their counterparts and feature much more individual attention. The program regularly arranges special research and internship placements, including for first-year students. Recently, a second-semester health administration student had an internship with addiction-treatment facility in which she designed evaluation instruments for its education programs and then analyzed the results from the evaluation forms. In a similar vein, the UHP supports students’ goals and dreams; it secured financial support for a student who dreams of having a professional singing career to organize and promote her concert, including hiring an 8-piece band. The UHP arranged a study abroad opportunity for a country in which MSUB has no partner institutions. With such initiatives as its guest writers-in-residence, the UHP connects its students with talented professionals, typically with the result that students become published authors themselves. As conclusion to their UHP experience, students tackle a significant local problem, thereby strengthening the problem-solving skills they take into the world.
